In metal cladding systems, the connection design of color steel sheets, metal sandwich panels, and corrugated metal sheets directly affects the waterproofing performance, wind uplift resistance, and overall structural safety of the roof and walls. Different sheet types require corresponding connection methods; incorrect selection may lead to leaks or the sheets being blown over by the wind. Currently, corrugated metal sheets are mainly classified into four types based on their longitudinal edge connection structure: overlap, interlocking, snap-fit, and locking. Each type has its own characteristics in terms of fixing to the main structure.
☆Overlapping is the most basic method. The sheets naturally overlap, and fasteners are directly driven through the sheets into the supporting steel beams. Construction is simple, but screws are exposed, making it suitable for conventional factory buildings in areas without strong winds.
☆Interlocking requires specialized equipment to roll and interlock the overlap edges along their length, connecting to the structure through hidden fixing brackets. There are no exposed screws, significantly improving waterproofing and wind uplift resistance, and it is commonly used for large-span metal roofs.
☆Interlocking connections fall between the two, with panels mechanically pressed together at the edges and using fixed supports, offering faster installation.
☆Locking connections are more precise, with panels interlocking at the overlap and secured to the substructure using specialized connectors, forming a stable overall load-bearing system, suitable for high-wind zones or important buildings.
Regardless of the connection method, the profiled metal panels are ultimately fixed to the main structure using fasteners or supports (including fixed and sliding supports). 360° interlocking connections typically use sliding supports to allow for displacement due to thermal expansion and contraction. Correctly understanding and selecting matching panel types and connection techniques is a prerequisite for ensuring the long-term safe use of metal cladding systems. Designers should comprehensively consider the climate conditions, span requirements, and building grade of the project location to select the most suitable solution.
