Which Steel Surface Is Best for Your Cleanroom Panels?

Many buyers spend hours comparing core materials—but overlook the one layer that faces water, chemicals, and daily wear every single day: the surface steel. After three years, the difference between a rust-stained panel and a shiny-new one often comes down to this outer layer. So what sets galvanized, aluminum-zinc coated, and stainless steel apart?

1. Three Steels, One Core Difference: The Coating

Galvanized steel – most economical, pure zinc coating.

Aluminum-zinc coated steel – better resistance to atmospheric corrosion.

Stainless steel – the "maintenance-free" choice, no coating needed.

2. Key Spec: Don't Just Look at Thickness—Check Coating Weight

Galvanized: Common range Z100–Z275 (higher number = thicker coating; Z275 ≈ 275 g/m²).

Aluminum-zinc: Common range AZ100–AZ185 (AZ150 ≈ 150 g/m²).

Stainless: Grade + surface finish (e.g., 304/316L with 2B or BA finish)—not coating weight.

Two important notes: coating weight and sheet thickness are different specs—always confirm both when quoting. For food and pharmaceutical areas, also verify food-contact safety coating compliance; the steel substrate alone isn't enough.

3. Which Steel for Which Cleanroom Scenario?

There's no "best" steel—only the one that fits your environment.

Scenario

Recommended Surface

General electronics plants, packing rooms

Galvanized steel – cost-effective and sufficient

Food processing, wash-down areas with acids/alkalis

Aluminum-zinc or stainless steel; frequent wash zones → 304 stainless

Pharmaceutical sterile core zones (Grade A/B)

Electrolytic steel or stainless that withstands alcohol/H₂O₂ disinfection, resists dust and peeling under frequent wiping

High-humidity or condensation-risk areas

Aluminum-zinc or stainless outperforms standard galvanized, reducing edge corrosion

Match the steel to your room, not the price tag. Galvanized handles dry general spaces. Aluminum-zinc steps up for humidity and temperature swings. Stainless (304/316L) takes on wet, chemical-heavy, or sterile zones. Coating weight (Z/AZ) matters more than sheet thickness alone, and food/pharma sites must check safety coatings too. Choose right, and your panels stay clean for years, not rust.
